In my communion address (on a) Sunday morning, I shared a simple meditation (not original with me) that may be thought upon as the church breaks bread. Assuming that some of us might want to commit the meditation to memory for future use, I decided to print it here:

One. One Savior died for my sins and reconciled me to the Father. Jesus said: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).

Two. Two criminals were executed with Jesus. “Two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left” (Matt. 27:38).

Three. Three crosses stood on the hill Golgotha. The one in the middle was the cross of redemption. Another was the cross of repentance. “Jesus,” one of the robbers pleaded, “remember me when You come in Your kingdom!” (Luke 23:42, NASB). Third was the cross of rebellion. One of the robbers cursed the Lord with his dying breath.

Four. Four soldiers divided up the Lord’s clothes, casting lots for his tunic (John 19:24).

Five. Five deep wounds marred the Lord’s body. Both hands (wrists) were pierced, as were both feet. And a spear was driven into his side. (In addition, thorns pierced Jesus’ scalp, fists battered his face, and a whip laid open his back.)

Six. Six hours Jesus writhed in anguish on the cross.

Seven. Seven short sayings were spoken by Jesus as he died.

1. “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34).

2. “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43).

3. “Woman, behold your son! […] Behold your mother!” (John 19:26-27).

4. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34, NIV).

5. “I thirst” (John 19:28).

6. “It is finished” (John 19:30).

7. “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” (Luke 23:46, NIV). -David Wright

4 For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. - Hebrews 6:4-6

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. - 1 John 1:7
